Mary Middlefield releases upbeat song "This One's For You"

and announces her forthcoming album ‘Thank You, Alexander’ due 3rd March. ‘This One’s For You’ showcases an atmospheric sonic, which she co-produced alongside frequent collaborator Gwen Buord that demonstrates a more upbeat side to Mary. Continuously pushing her songwriting abilities to the limit, Mary reflects on meeting her soul mate in the song with lines such as

Laying under blue skies talking to you, I haven’t met you yet, someday I’ll get to.” capturing the essence of a budding romance. As Mary continues to add personal touches to her growing artistry, the video, directed by Imogen Harrison (Peaky Blinders, Luz), reflects the story of a failed romance told through a fun-filled lens.

“It was a pleasure working with the same crew of musicians throughout the project, and we had a lot of fun improvising throughout the process of making TOFY. As a child, we feel like we have to subscribe to certain stories we might come across in books or films and I wanted the track to mark a sarcastic tone to the traditional fairy tale, princess storylines we are fed.”

Once upon a time in a sleepy town in Switzerland, a brilliant young classical musician had her heart broken. In 2020, Mary Middlefield was just about to graduate with honours and everything was good – until she realised that one boy who left her held the key to the next chapter in her life. Having played the violin for 15 years, Mary used the pandemic as a moment of transition into a new direction with complete guidance and support from her parents. One of the greatest things her parents have taught her is how to use her voice carefully on political beliefs, climate change, racial equality, and more. Many influences range from Jeff Buckley and Radiohead to global pop icons Phoebe Bridges, Mitski, and Sufjan Stevens. Still, much of where we find Mary today, on the cusp of a reinvention and something of a rise from the ashes, is about her inner confidence and comfort. Comfort above anything else, reflecting on her decision to perform in a tracksuit as well as wear one in her artwork, differing drastically from the classical halls where she last performed.

As Mary expands on her previous singles ‘Band-Aid’ and “2001”, her attention is firmly set on her debut album which marks the first chapter of a new era in her musical journey. ‘Thank You, Alexander’ will be a milestone moment for Mary who is finalising music videos, live sessions, and the live aspect of the album ahead of a busy 2023.
