Pivoting from an extensive journey as a classical musician - including 15 years of playing the violin - ‘Band-Aid’ marks a new era for Mary who began writing and recording music between Switzerland and London during the pandemic. A soulful anecdote about a boy undeserving of her attention despite the urge, the song is driven by her powerful vocals and rich guitar that she learned to play just over a year ago. It’s safe to say we haven’t heard the last of this tale with heartbreak being the catalyst of Mary’s forthcoming releases.
Once upon a time in a sleepy town in Switzerland, a brilliant young classical musician had her heart broken. In 2020, Mary Middlefield was just about to graduate with honours and everything was good – until she realised that one boy who left her held the key to the next chapter in her life. Having played the violin for 15 years, Mary used the pandemic as a moment of transition into a new direction with full guidance and support from her parents. One of the greatest things her parents have taught her is how to use her voice carefully on political beliefs, climate change, racial equality and more. A wide range of influences range from Jeff Buckley and Radiohead to global pop icons, Phoebe Bridges, Mitski and Sufjan Stevens. Still, much of where we find Mary today, on the cusp of a reinvention and something of rise from the ashes, is about her own inner confidence and comfort. Comfort above anything else, reflecting on her decision to perform in a tracksuit as well as wear one in her artwork, differing drastically from the classical halls where she last performed.
We’re blessed to live in an era full of female singer-songwriters turning their personal pain into something beautiful, but Mary’s voice and vision are more complex than many. With every intention of cementing her name far and wide, Band-Aid marks her first step towards greatness for Mary’s musical journey.
